About

What is the Pedestrian Advisory Council (PAC)?
A more walkable DC  is imperative to enhancing public safety, improving quality of life and increasing local economic activity.  With this in mind,  the DC City Council created the Pedestrian Advisory Council (PAC) in 2010 to serve as the advisory body to the Mayor and Council of the District of Columbia on matters pertaining to the improvement of pedestrian safety and accessibility.  The PAC supports measures across all eight wards and aims to make walking safer, more enjoyable, and more convenient.  The legislative decision to create the PAC can be found in the FY2010 Budget Support Act, Title VI, Subsection G.

--> The Pedestrian Advisory Council meetings are open to the public.  They are usually held at 6:00pm on the second Monday of each month on the 11th floor of One Judiciary Square, 441 4th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001 (Judiciary Square Metro - red line). Check this website for changes in the meeting schedule or email dcpedcouncil@gmail.com to confirm meeting time and location

PAC's Objectives
  • Develop policy recommendations to the Mayor and the Council.
  • Review existing city policies, practices, and processes that affect the pedestrian environment in light of best practices from other jurisdictions.
  • Monitor implementation of the Pedestrian Master Plan
  • Identify opportunities to support city officials to better address pedestrian issues, and educate, engage, and learn from the public on pedestrian issues.

Accomplishments
  • Mapped pedestrian traffic collisions and conducted field observations at 10 intersections with high pedestrian fatality rates for a forthcoming report to the Mayor and City Council
  • Conducted public education through press and community meetings about the safety benefits of the city's photo enforcement program
  • Testified with recommendations at over one dozen City Council oversight and budget hearing

Membership
The PAC has 18 members who are residents of the District of Columbia with a demonstrated interest in pedestrian safety.  The thirteen (13) voting members all appointed by members of the DC City Council.   The five (5) non-voting members are representatives from the following city agencies, which are required to designate a liaison to the PAC:  Department of Transportation (DDOT), Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Office of Planning (DCOP), Public Schools (DCPS), and Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR).  Full membership list follows.
